PUBLIC BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE

You are about to make an entry into a Public Book of Remembrance where you are able to leave a message and light a candle for your loved ones. However, if you have recently lost a loved one - or wish to leave a message for family, friends or neighbours who have recently lost a loved one - you may prefer to make your entry in their own Private Book Of Remembrance.

To check whether a Private Book of Remembrance has been opened you can either click on the Books of Remembrance link in the left hand panel above and browse the listing of activated Books or use our Search Website facility. Entering the surname only will enhance your search results. When a Book is returned its status is indicated by a small book icon - a red cross indicates that you are unable to make any entries until the Book Owner, usually the family member responsible for the funeral arrangements, has activated the Book.

PLEASE CHECK CAREFULLY THAT THE ENTRY YOU MAKE IS IN THE APPROPRIATE BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE.

Remembrance Day

This is a Book of Remembrance that has been specially commissioned by the Chester Chronicle to commemorate Remembrance Day in memory of all those who died in the two World Wars and all subsequent wars and conflicts. Each year, at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, we will remember them.

Once known as Armistice Day it was renamed Remembrance Day after the Second World War but of course to many of us it is simply known as Poppy Day. November is poppy month, the time of the year when by the wearing of a simple emblem, a red poppy, we salute the memory of those who sacrificed their health, their strength, even their lives, that we might live in a free country.

If you would like to leave a message in memory of those who died, please do so. Any proceeds from the lighting of candles will be donated to the Royal British Legion, the UK's leading charity providing financial, social and emotional support to millions who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces, and their dependants

If you wish to view further tributes and photographs please click and play our Remembrance Day Album.

Remembering Vince Karalius

Vincent Peter Patrick Karalius (15 October, 1932 - 13 December, 2008)

Vince Karalius, a colossus of the 13-a-side code and one of the few to be inducted into rugby league's official Hall of Fame, has died.

The young Vinty signed for St Helens in 1952 and carved a reputation as one of the toughest and most skilful forwards in the game.

He won many trophies at Knowsley Road, including the Challenge Cup in 1956 and 1961.
On the 1958 Ashes tour, he proved a scourge of the Australians and earned the nickname Wild Bull of the Pampas from the Aussie press.

Later moving onto his hometown club, Widnes, he captained the then-Chemics to victory in the 1964 Challenge Cup.

He returned to Naughton Park as coach in 1972, steering his hometown club to Lancashire Cup and Challenge Cup success three years later while developing the team, which over the next decade became known as the Cup Kings. After a spell as coach at Wigan, Vinty returned to Widnes for further Wembley glory in 1984.

Leave your tributes to Vince and please share any memories, stories or anecdotes you have of this great man.

A tribute to Craig Jones

British rider Craig Jones died following an accident in Sunday's British round of the World Supersport Championship.

The 23-year-old from Northwich, Cheshire, fell as he challenged for the lead in the race at Brands Hatch and was hit by a following rider.

The race was immediately stopped and Jones received medical attention at the circuit before being air-lifted to the Royal London Hospital for further treatment. However, he died in the early hours of Monday morning (August 4, 2008).

Jones was one of the rising young stars of British motorcycle racing, famed for giving his all on-track - via a spectacular riding style - and amiable personality off-track.
Please leave your tributes here.
